Despicable Me: A Not-So-Perfect Plan Turns Out Perfectly(5)

Gru: Okay, girls, time for bed.
Edith: Oh, come on! We want a story!
  Agnes: Three sleepy kittens!
Gru: Oh, no! Sorry, that…that book was accidentally destroyed maliciously[怀有恶意地]. Tonight we are going to read a new book. This one is called One Big Unicorn[独角兽] by...who wrote this? Oh, me! I wrote it! Oh look, it's a puppet book! Here, watch this. (Gru puts his nose through the hole on the cover.) That's the horn[角].
Agnes: This is gonna be the best book ever!
Gru: Not to pat myself on the back, but, yes, it probably will be. Here we go:
“One big unicorn, strong and free, thought he was happy as he could be. Then three little kittens came around and turned his whole life upside down.”
Edith: Hey, that one looks like me!
Gru: No, what are you talking about? These are kittens! Any relation to persons living or dead is completely coincidental[
“They made him laugh. They made him cry. He never should have said goodbye. And for now he knows he could never part from those three little kittens that changed his heart. The end.”
  Okay, all right. Good night.

“pat sb. / oneself on the back”为非正式用语,意思是“称赞某人/自夸”;“pat”也可以用作名词,“a pat on the back”同样表示“赞扬”,例如:
The teacher patted him on the back for doing a good job.
At a time like this, what she needs is a pat on the back.
