Pride and Prejudice(1995)

  Unsociable

(Elizabeth is playing the piano while chatting with Colonel Fitzwilliam.)
Colonel Fitzwilliam(Darcy’s cousin): I should dearly like to know how he behaves among strangers.
Elizabeth: First time I ever saw Mr. Darcy was at a ball, where he danced only four dances…though gentlemen were scarce and more than one lady was in want of a partner. I’m sorry to pain you, but so it was.
Colonel Fitzwilliam: I can well believe it.
Mr. Darcy: I fear I am 1)ill-qualified to recommend myself to strangers.
Elizabeth: Shall we ask him why: why a man of sense and education, who has lived in the world, should be ill-qualified to recommend himself to strangers?
Mr. Darcy:I am…I have not that talent, which some possess, of 2)conversing easily with strangers.
Elizabeth: I do not play this instrument so well as I should wish to, but I have always supposed that to be my own fault, because I would not take the trouble of practising.
Mr. Darcy: You’re perfectly right. You’ve employed your time much better. No one admitted to the 3)privilege of hearing you could think anything wanting. We, neither of us, perform to strangers.

  Unspeakable

Elizabeth: If I could love a man who would love me enough to take me for a mere fifty pounds a year, I should be very well pleased.
  Jane: Yes.
Elizabeth: Such a man could hardly be sensible and you know I could never love a man who was 4)out of his wits.
Jane: Oh, Lizzy. A marriage, where either partner cannot love or respect the other; that cannot be agreeable to either party.
Elizabeth: As we have daily proof. But beggars, you know, cannot be choosers.
Jane: We’re not very poor, Lizzy.
Elizabeth: With father’s estate5)entailed away from the female line, we have little but our charms to recommend us. One of us, at least, will have to marry very well. And since you are quite five times as pretty as the rest of us, and have the sweetest 6)disposition, I fear the task will fall on you to raise our fortunes.
Jane: But Lizzy, I would wish…I should so much like…to marry for love.
  Elizabeth: And soon you shall!
  Jane: Are you sure?
Elizabeth: Only take care you fall in love with a man of good fortune.
Jane: Well I shall try. To please you! And you?
Elizabeth: I am determined that nothing but the very deepest love will induce me into7)matrimony. So, I shall end an old maid and teach your ten children to 8)embroider cushions and play their instruments very ill. (laughter)

  Unabashed

Miss Bingley: Miss Elizabeth, let me persuade you to follow my example and take a turn about the room. It’s so refreshing. Will you not join us, Mr. Darcy?
Mr. Darcy: That would defeat the object.
Miss Bingley: What do you mean, sir? What on earth can he mean?
Elizabeth: I think we would do better not to inquire.
Miss Bingley: May we insist on knowing your meaning, sir?
Mr. Darcy: Why that your figures appear to best advantage when walking and that I might best admire them from my present position.
Miss Bingley: (laughter) Shocking! 9)Abominable reply! How shall we punish him, Miss Elizabeth?
Elizabeth: Nothing so easy. Tease him. Laugh at him.
Miss Bingley: Laugh at Mr. Darcy? Impossible! He is a man without fault.
Elizabeth: Is he indeed? A man without fault!
Mr. Darcy: That is not possible for anyone, but it has been my study to avoid those weaknesses which expose a strong understanding to 10)ridicule.
Elizabeth: Such as vanity perhaps, and pride?
Mr. Darcy: Yes, vanity is a weakness indeed. But pride…where there is a real superiority of mind, pride will always be under good regulation. I have faults enough, Miss Bennet, but I hope they are not of understanding. My temper I cannot 11)vouch for. It might be called resentful. My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever.
Elizabeth: That is a failing indeed, but I cannot laugh at it.
Mr. Darcy: I believe every disposition has a tendency to some particular evil.
Elizabeth: Your defect is a 12)propensity to hate everyone.
Mr. Darcy: Well, yours is willfully to misunderstand them.
Miss Bingley: Shall we have some music? Hmm?

Pride and Prejudice(1995)

  Understandable

Elizabeth: Mr. Darcy. I can go no longer without thanking you for your kindness to my poor sister. I know what trouble and what 13)mortification it must have cost you. Please let me say this. Please allow me to thank you, on behalf of all my family, since they don’t know to whom they are 14)indebted.
Mr. Darcy: If you will thank me, let it be for yourself alone. Your family is nothing. Much as I respect them, I believe I thought only of you.
You are too generous to 15)trifle with me. If your feelings are what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.
Elizabeth: My feelings are…I’m ashamed to remember what I said then. My feelings are so different. In fact, they are quite the opposite.

Mr. Darcy: My behaviour to you at the time was 16)unpardonable. I can hardly think of it without 17)abhorrence. Your 18)reproof I shall never forget. “Had you behaved in a more gentleman-like manner,…” You know not how those words have tortured me.
Elizabeth: I had not the smallest idea of they ever being taken in such a way.
Mr. Darcy: I can easily believe it. You thought me 19)devoid of every proper feeling, I’m sure you did. The turn of your 20)countenance, I shall never forget. You said that I could not have addressed you in any possible way that would induce you to accept me.
Elizabeth: Ohh, do not repeat what I said then.
Mr. Darcy:I have been a selfish being all my life. As a child I was given good principles, but was left to follow them in pride and 21)conceit. And such I might still have been but for you.
