  Landmark 地 标
Sydney is Australia’s largest, oldest and 1)brashest city, famous for a 2)cosmopolitan yet laid-back lifestyle, first-rate beaches, world-class surfing and a glorious harbor that showcases one of the world’s most distinctive buildings, the Sydney Opera House. At first 3)reviled for its startling modern design, the opera house has come to be as 4)emblematic of Sydney as the Eiffel Tower is of Paris. The building took 15 years to complete, during which time its 5)disillusioned Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, resigned and later refused to see his finished masterpiece. Utzon’s groundbreaking design pushed the limits of engineering making greater use of computer analysis and giving way to a global 6)proliferation of shapely, 7)idiosyncratic buildings. From the day it opened in 1973, the opera house, with its 8)colossal 9)iridescent shells, continues to attract a steady stream of wide-eyed visitors and is home to some of the world’s most innovative theatrical productions.

Australia’s “can do” spirit may owe a debt of gratitude to an unlikely past as a 10)penal colony. Starting in 1788, England began shipping its undesirables to faraway Sydney, establishing an experimental prison colony teeming with energy. In a way, England’s worst made for Australia’s best as the colony evolved into a world-class city.

  Minjin
  Melanie: Oh my Gawd!
  Ablin: Whoa, …Whoa!
The Jungle Swing or Minjin is definitely not for the faint of heart. It can carry three passengers and reach speeds of 60 miles per hour. The word “Minjin” comes from an old 17)Aboriginal legend about a18)vicious cat-like creature, a Minjin, who would roam these slopes attacking 19)unsuspecting visitors. Melanie: Now they just look like it.
Ablin: You’re not even that high off the ground. You just go uphill. When you think about it, you know, ….
  Melanie: I’m not doing that.
  Ablin: (laughing) Come on.
Melanie: … never do something like this. It’s stupid.
Ablin: We can do it together, you and me. What do you think? We could lock our arms. Perfectly safe.
  Melanie: I’ll be here waiting.
Ablin: Honestly I think you’re gonna do it.
Melanie: I’ll be here waiting, man.
Ablin: I think you’re gonna do it.
  Melanie: You do?
Ablin: Mmm. I got a good feelin’ about this…
