M.J: A Meteor of Music

   M.J.’s Early DaysMJ

1)Barry Gordie’s Assistant: My gosh! That’s pretty special, ’cause this little tiny boy was singing with all the soul and passion of a 35-year-old man.
A black group shattering mainstream barriers and a little boy, the 2)obsessive force driving it all.
Barry Gordie’s Assistant: His brothers might be outside, you know, playing basketball, but he’d be watching the producers mix a record or asking Barry Gordie 1001 questions about producing and about the business and about why this, why that?
Gordie: And then I realized that he was studying me. Later I realized, of course, he’d not only studied me but he studied everybody, from 3)Walt Disney, Marcel Marceau, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, you know, all these people he was really studying.

The 4)Jackie Robinson of MTV MTV

Among his many other 5)accolades, Michael Jackson would be called “The Jackie Robinson of MTV,” the man whose video for “Billy Jean” opened the door for so many other African-American performers to get 6)big-time air time on the channel.
Music Producer: Michael Jackson helped invent the idea of music as a very visual media.
Those big-budget videos that launched the careers and set the personas of artists from Madonna to 7)Diddy to Britney; Michael made all that possible by dropping half a million on “Thriller.”

  His Unique Dancing

Where did it come from? The steps unlike anything ever witnessed.
Debbie Allen (Dance Choreographer): There’s an expression about trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Whenever you saw Michael Jackson on stage, that’s what it was like. It was like that thunderstorm that came out lightnin’ an’ thunderin’ power, and then it would all calm down, and then you could see better, and then he was smooth and quiet like the gentle rain. He was all of that. He was a force of nature.

  B Box

  (An interview before he died)
Even today Jackson obsesses over every word, every move, every sound.
  Jackson: Hear this.
What you’re hearing is not the electric drum machine, it’s a 8)hard-wired 48-track digitally mastered human.
Jackson: What I mean, so, I’ll take that and use that as the main foundation for the track and build all the sounds around that, know what I’m sayin’?

So whatever the future, the music is still inside the man who says soon he’ll be back where he’s most at home.
Interviewer: Are you really anxious to get back on stage?
Jackson: Uuhhmm, I miss the fans. I, that’s my chance to get to really, you know, see them and feel their presence.
When you do a concert and there’s like 100,000 people out there and there’s a song that you wrote in a little hotel room somewhere and you see a sea of people singing the words all 9)in unison, holding up candles, and you’d go, “WOW!” You know, just really makes your heart happy and that’s what really make[s] you feel like everything’s OK.
