苦难是不够的 Suffering is not enough

  

    Life is filled with suffering, but it is also filled with many wonders, like the blue sky, the sunshine, the eyes of a baby. To suffer is not enough. We must also be in touch with the wonders of life. They are within us and all around us, everywhere, any time. If we are not happy, if we are not peaceful, we cannot share peace and happiness with others, even those we love, those who live under the same roof. If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace

生活充满了苦难,但同时也充满了奇迹,就像蓝天,阳光和婴孩的眼睛。受苦是不够的,我们还要享受生活的美好。这些美好随时随地都在我们心中、在我们身边。如果我们不开心,不平静,我们就不能与他人甚至是我们的爱人、与我们住在同一屋檐下的人分享安宁和幸福。如果我们内心平静、快乐,我们就能像花儿一样微笑和绽放。我们家庭中的每一员,我们的整个社会会因我们心境的平静而受益。

 

   Do we need to make a special effort to enjoy the beauty of the blue sky? Do we have to practice to be able to enjoy it? No, we just enjoy it. Each second, each minute of our lives can be like this. Wherever we are, any time, we have the capacity to enjoy the sunshine, the presence of each other, even the sensation of our breathing. We don’t need to go to China to enjoy the blue sky. We don’t have to travel into the future to enjoy our breathing. We can be in touch with these things right now. it would be a pity if we are only aware of suffering

我们需要通过特别的努力来享受蓝天的美丽吗?我们需要联系才能享受吗?不,我们什么不做也能享受蓝天的美丽。我们生命中的每一分、每一秒都能这样。无论何时,无论何地,我们都能享受阳光、彼此的陪伴、甚至呼吸的感觉。我们不需要去中国才能享受蓝天。我们更不需要等到将来才能享受我们的生命,这一切我们现在就触手可及。如果我们只在意生活中的磨难,那将是一大憾事。

 

   We are so busy we hardly have time to look at the people we love, even in our own household, and look at ourselves. Society is organized in a way that even when we have some leisure time, we don’t know how to use it to get back in touch with ourselves. We have millions of ways to lose this precious time—we turn on the TV or pick up the telephone, or start the car and go somewhere. We are not used to being with ourselves, and we act as if we don’t like ourselves and are trying to escape from ourselves

我们太忙碌以至于我们没有时间留意我们爱的人,甚至是我们的家人和自己。社会的构成方式使得我们即使有空余的时间,我们也不知道如何利用它来了解自己。我们有数百万种方法来浪费这些宝贵的时间。我们看电视、打电话或者开车外出。我们不习惯与自己相处,而且我们表现得似乎不喜欢自己,总想逃离自己。

 

   From time to time, to remind ourselves to relax, to be peaceful, we may wish to set aside some time for retreat, a day of mindfulness, when we can walk slowly, smile, drink tea with a friend, enjoy being together as if we are the happiest people on earth. This is not a retreat, it is a treat. During walking meditation, during kitchen and garden work, during sitting meditation, all day long, we can practice smiling. At first you may find it difficult to smile, and we have to think about why. Smiling means that we are ourselves, that we have sovereignty over ourselves, that we are not drowned into forgetfulness. This kind of smile can be seen on the faces of Buddha and bodhisattvas.

 

   I would like to offer one short poem you can recite from time to time, while breathing and smiling:

 

   Breathing in, I calm my body.

 

   Breathing out, I smile

 

   Dwelling in the present moment

 

   I know this is a wonderful moment

时而不时,为了提醒自己放松、平静,我们也许希望空出一些时间来静修或抽出一天来沉思。这个时候我们能悠闲地散步、微笑、与朋友喝喝茶、享受共聚时光,似乎我们是地球上最快乐的人。这不是静修,而是享受。在散步沉思时,在厨房和花园干活时,在坐着沉思时,一整天我们都能练习微笑。起初你可能觉得很难微笑,我们要思考微笑的原因。微笑意味着真我,我们能掌握自己,我们没有疏忽大意。佛和菩萨的脸上展现的就是这样的微笑。

   Even though life is hard, even though it is sometimes difficult to smile, we have to try. Just as when we wish each other, “Good morning,” it must be a real “good morning.” Recently, one friend asked me, “How can I force myself to smile when I am filled with sorrow? It isn’t natural.” I told her she must be able to smile to her sorrow, because we are more than our sorrow. A human being is like a television set with millions of channels. If we turn the Buddha on, we are the Buddha. If we turn sorrow on, we are sorrow. If we turn smile on, we really are the smile. We cannot let just one channel dominate us. We have the seed of everything in us, and we have to seize the situation in our hand, to recover our own sovereignty.

尽管生活艰难,尽管有时很难去微笑,我们要去尝试。就像我们互相打招呼的时候,“早上好”必须是发自内心的“早上好”。最近,一位朋友问我,当我悲伤的时候,我怎能强迫自己去微笑?这样很做作。我告诉她,她一定要能够微笑面对他的伤悲,因为除了悲伤,我们还拥有更多。人就像一部有百万个频道的电视机。如果我们打开佛的频道,我们就是佛。如我们打开悲伤的频道,我们就是悲伤。如果我们打开微笑的频道,我们就真的是微笑。我们不能只是让一个频道来主宰我们。我们有万物的种子,因此我们要掌控我们手中的情况,来恢复我们对自己的主宰。

 

   Smiling is very important. If we are not able to smile, then the world will not have peace. It is not by going out for a demonstration against nuclear missiles that we can bring about peace. It is with our capacity of smiling, breathing, and being peace that we can make peace.

微笑是非常重要的。如果我们无法微笑,那么世界就会失去和平。我们不是通过示威反对核武器就能取得和平。而是尽力保持微笑、呼吸、平静才能带来和平。
